Review of CorningWare French White 8-Piece Casserole Set

I don't have the round ones, but I have the 2.5 and 1.5 oval ones.Ok, they're corningware, so you'll know they work great, but if I was buying them again, I'd find ones with handles.When you have 2.5 quarts of casserole, that's a heavy dish. Now try to pick it up out of the oven when it has no handles!It's difficult and awkward. On the other hand, they do look great sitting on the table.

If you enjoy making individual size portions, you can use these for mini-soufflés or to serve fruit salad for breakfast. These hold just under 1-cup of liquid and they are about the size of your palm.

They are also very useful for dipping sauces or for bite-size vegetables and dip. We mix half mayonnaise and half Italian dressing so we can dip baby carrots into the creamy mixture.

When making certain dishes, you might want to measure out your ingredients before you start. (Known as: mise en place)

These will hold up to 3/4 cup, or about that amount or dried ingredients. You will then feel like a chef as you toss the ingredients into the bowl when mixing.

Also useful for when you are making spicy dishes and you want to mix up all the spices and add them all at once. When you are cooking rice, use these dishes to help shape a pile of rice (press freshly cooked rice into the ramekin) and then turn the dish over on a serving plate...then surround with sauce or your main dish servings. Very nice presentation!

Look for a "mini-whisk" for use when you want to mix up a small amount of ingredients in these very versatile dishes.

I started buying Rada cutlery at one of the big Home & Garden Shows because I was tired of cheap knives and of peelers that just didn't work.

This bread knife is simply the best for the price.My daughter has a 10" Wusthof classic bread knife that doesn't cut as well as this Rada.I make a number of artisan breads; the Rada knife can handle any type of crust from tough and crisp to those delicate, thin crusts.

The knife is so sharp, there is no danger of crushing your bread by having to put pressure on the knife during the slicing process.The blade is not so thick that it can't be used with some of the slicing guides that are available.

The only drawback, if you are into appearances, is that the handle will discolor if it is not dried after washing or if you allow it to sit in water. Also, these knives should not be put in the dishwasher.

Review of Hamilton Beach 24635 4-Slice Bagel Toaster

I just recently had to replace my 4 slice toaster and wasn't sure which one to buy. I read the reviews of so many different brands, but I wanted to stick with a brand that I was not only familiar with, but knew had a good reputation. I decided on this one even though it had no reviews, because of the bagel feature. I am so glad I did. This toaster is fairly large, but the cancel and bagel features are awesome. Now when I make bacon egg and cheese sandwiches for my kids, I don't have to toast the rolls in the pan before I cook the eggs. Now I can just use this toaster with the bagel feature and it only toasts one side. Just the way my son likes it. It cuts the time in half. It does sometimes take a long time for it to finish, maybe about 3 or 4 minutes. My other toaster was a little faster then that, but it didn't have the bagel feature. I really do love this new toaster, it's great!

It's finally wearing out after two years of multiple daily use. For the price, I'll buy another instead of searching for parts.

- It opens any size or shape can without complaint, thoroughly, consistently, and easily.
- It's quiet.
- It's attractive.
- The opened cans are smooth, without burrs or edges to cut you.
- The cutting assembly is easy to remove for cleaning, easy to clean, and easy to replace.

I'd guess that the reviewer who gave this well designed unit such a bad rating failed to regularly clean the cutting assembly regularly. A drop of oil in appropriate spots before reassembling it helps it last and keep working perfectly.

Review of Traditions 1.5 Cup Food Chopper

This was an ok food chopper. As the description says, it has a 1.5 cup capacity. If you are processing liquids, the recommended capacity is only 3/4 cup.

I've only used this once so far - to make hummus - so the mixture was pretty thick and there was a lot of opening the chopper up to mix things up and add ingredients (there is no opening to add stuff as chopper is on); this was a bit of a hassle and rather time consuming.I dumped the whole can of chick peas in, so the chopper was full. Maybe it would have been easier to puree & mix everything if I had stuck to the recommended capacity. But in the end everything turned out alright.

I'm sure it'll chop nuts, vegetables well enough, but you may have to mix things in the chopper yourself to get an even consistency, and chop things in smaller batches. You'll also probably have to make sure things can fit into the processor (quarter tomatoes, onions, etc. first).

This is a good item if you need smaller portions (ideal for a single person) and don't use it a lot.If you're cooking for several people, or use a food processor a lot, spend your money on a better food processor with more capacity and options. Clean up was pretty easy- only 3 small pieces to wash, and the entire thing is small where it can be easily stored.I got this for $7 at a local store, and honestly, I don't think it's worth more than $10. Given the cheap price I bought it for, and the frequency I'll probably use it, this was a good deal.

Review of Silicone Baking Sheet

I've owned these mats for several years now, and they are exactly what they promise: flexible (easy to store), dishwasher safe, and releases food easily.One side of the mat is smooth and the other side is textured, with raised length markings (eg, "1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, ..."); you can bake on both sides.

Keep in mind that these are silicone mats, and they share some of the downsides of all other silicone mats.First, "releases food easily" doesn't mean non-stick; neither side of the mat will feel glistening smooth.Food will still lift off easily (when lifting cookies, remember to let them cool/solidify for a bit, of course!).Second, they WILL STAIN with use, and this is expected.

What disappoints me about these mats is how UGLY they make my food.My biggest gripe with these mats is that they quickly EXPAND when heated, even after 3 minutes at a mere 350 F!Unfortunately, since the mat is usually underneath something heavier and colder (eg, cookie dough) it expands unevenly into a rippled shape, and the between-cookie "bubbles" can rise as tall as .5 inch.As a result, cookies can't expand into a nice round shape; they set into whatever malformed shape exists between bubbles.That's fine for home-baking, but I don't use these mats when baking for friends or co-workers.My second gripe is that the length markings are not printed on the mat; they're raised.This means that, unless I like having numbers imprinted onto the bottom of my baked goods (and scraping dough out of those raised numbers), a significant fraction of my mat is unusable.

After reading reviews, I decided to purchase this set. I got so tired of storing in plastic and having to switch to a different container to then reheat (TWO bowls to clean up). These are great for both purposes, the sizes fit my needs, I can see what's inside. Since my storage space is limited I nest 2 sets, and usually have the extra 2-cup in constant use. Review of Oneida Mercer 53-Piece Set, Service for 8

I had the same two similar looking sets of flatware for the past 15 years or so that I bought when I first moved away from home. They were cheap and lightweight and I did not know anything better existed until a friend of ours began letting us use his home down in the Keys. He has Oneida flatware in the house and the two times we went I took notice of their weight, balance and sturdiness, not to mention they were attractive on the table. I finally decided to see what was the big deal about expensive flatware. I found out when they arrived. Mercer is not the top of the line for Oneida, but it's very well made and durable and very attractive. I like the part shiny part satin handle. They hold up well in the dishwasher so far. They take up more room in the drawer because they are much thicker than my old raggedy flatware. I love them and highly recommend this brand of flatware. Remember to wait for the best sale or clearance and use coupons!

If you are able to get real bagels - as opposed to the bread-like things sold in grocery stores or in the mid-West - this knife is for you.I make my own bagels, using high-gluten flour and the boiling method, and the exterior is definitely the "tough" crust of real bagels.Most bread knives had some difficulty biting into the crust and then cutting through the entire bagel.

This Rada bagel knife bit right in and was able to handle the tough bagel crust without damaging the more delicate interior.I've been using it for three years, and the knife is just as sharp as the day I got it.

I would not recommend using this knife on more delicate breads and rolls as the cutting edge is rather coarse.Rada makes a wonderful bread knife and a short bread knife that are ideal for other breads.

Review of Chicago Cutlery 18-Piece Insignia Steel Block Set with In Block Sharpener

I ordered it on December 13th and I received it December 23rd with the Free Shipping. I needed a daily use block set because I love to cook and I wanted a eye-appealing since it was going to be sitting on the counter of my kitchen. The Block was nicely built and had a in-block sharpener which is fantastic. Each knife was sharp and felt heavy in the hand, which made it feel more stable. They were stainless steel and had a aerodynamic design which was very eye-pleasing especially in my stainless steel kitchen. The steak knives were not serrated, but cut easily into meat. The cheese set and mezzaluna were great bonuses along with the block set. They are not made with the same quality as the knife set so don't expect it. The cheese set is nice with wooden handles, and the mezzaluna is very sharp with plastic handle.
With the Omaha Steak Offer. As I recall it was a 3-Option deal. They would have either a chicken and burgers option, an steak and dessert option, or chicken and fish option. Don't quote me on that, it's just from memory. I found the offer under Special Offers on the page, but I'm sure you could search for it on amazon's website. You would need the UPC bar code from the box, the printout about the special offer, and the receipt from amazon that came from the box.
Overall I am very happy with my purchase and will buy from Chicago cutlery again, if not the same set.

Review of Chicago Cutlery Classic 14-pc. Set

My wife came home with this set about 6 months ago after she saw it on sale.It is awful.The serrated blades do not cut, they tend to rip apart whatever it is you're cutting.The description says they never need sharpening.They needed sharpening right out of the box because they are pretty much worthless.The blades are poor quality stainless which developed rust spots the first time they were washed.

I wish I could give these knives a "No Stars" rating.

Review of Oxford 12-pc. Cutlery Set

I had my eye on this set for a couple of months and hesitated to purchase it because I had not heard of hampton forge. But I loved the knife block and it looked like a decent quality set so I bought it for $50 plus tax. The very first day I had the set, I used a knife and rinsed it off and set it in the sink. An hour later, it was beginning to rust! This was sitting in a granite sink, not a steel sink and it rusted. Now just a few months later, all my knives have rust spots that won't come off and they look horrible. I would never recommend this set or this brand to anyone. Save your money for a higher quality set or it's just a waste.

These things are constructed so closely with OXO tongs they have to be made by the same plant.The only things that distinguish these from OXO good grips tongs are:

1.An embossed logo by the handle
2.A larger ring at the end of the lock
3.Lock is a bit tighter, but that may be due to my OXO tongs being several years old

The similarities with OXO are:

1.The exact same size and scalloped shape of the gripping end
2.The exact same shaft dimensions
3.The exact same handle material
4.Handle design so exact that the rubber grips are interchangeable
5.The hinge design, down the the internal spring and lock are visibly identical

If there is any doubt remaining, the product image is actually of OXO tongs, these tongs have a larger end loop on the lock with a copper ring attached.

Review of Outset A902, Replacement bristles for QT40, QB40 & QB45

I bought both the brush and the replacement bristles at the same time, since I had purchased another BBQ piece from these people and thought it was good quality (we gave it as a gift...but it looked high quality).This brush is a joke.I used it once...I mean, literally, I brushed it across my Weber Genesis and the bristles started coming out.I would say about 25% of the bristles came out after continuing for another 5 seconds.The grill was very hot...so maybe that softened the plastic that holds the bristles, or maybe it loosened the glue that they used on the bristles.I'm not really sure what it was, but I returned this lousy piece of junk and I won't ever purchase anything from this company again.Seeing their products in stores now, I can see why they have done well.Good packaging, and modern design and materials give it a high quality impression.I returned everything, the brushes, the replacement brushes, and even two other products from them.

So now, I am left without any brush.Basically, I can buy the cheapy ones that get nasty after a while and I have to throw away, or I can continue to use my tongs or a spatula edge to scrape of the debris.Maybe that is the right way to address grill debris anyway...a brush will always wear out.

This product is listed as a knife sharpener but that isnt what it really does.Its similiar to a butcher's steel.Its purpose is to take a knife that is already sharp and put a stright edge on it.You should only have to sharpen your knife once a year or so but should steel it frequently.When you use your knife the sharp edge gets bent over at the microscopic level and it no longer feels sharp.Using a steel realigns the edge and restores its sharpness.

The photo looks more imposing that it is.Its actually small and lightweight, made out of plastic.Its composed of two steel wheels. Draw the knife between them a few times and your edge will be restored at the proper angle.Its a good buy and recommended for any knife.

Review of Wallace Taos 77-Piece Stainless-Steel Flatware Set, Service for 12

We live in the southwest and I love the rustic look of the Taos flatware set.However, beyond the look there is not a lot of quality behind the design.The forks are what I dislike most because the ends of the tines are so thick and poorly crafted you can't stab a piece of lettuce to save your life.Also, the "stainless" part must be a thin veneer, since a couple of pieces have nicks through the outer layer (and keep in mind this is a new set) and that inner layer will lay a rust stain over the bottom of the sink in a short amount of time.All that said, I keep it for everyday use but wash it by hand.

Review of 5 Piece Sushi Knives

Nicely made knives at a good price. The three smaller, six inch knives feel good the the hand have a good balance.The blades themselves are hard enough to keep an edge, but not overly heavy, which I like.Regarding the longer knifes, I can't figure out the specific use of the slicer, but I can probably get some use of the yaganabi, though I wish it were a shosh wider.Good as these knives are, if I had to purchase a set again, I would probably look for a set which would include either a pairing knife, a bread knife and/or a sharpening steel.

Review of Steak Knife - Jumbo

I bought a set of these a few years ago and am very happy with them. The poly redwood looking handle is beautiful. I believe they lasted so long is becauseI do not put them in the heat of the dishwasher which can crack the handle along the rivets. Handwashing no soaking is recommended. Very nice and functional!

I purchased these knives as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend.We've been using them for 9 months now and they are still just as sharp as when they were first opened.The knives have a nice sturdy feel to them and a comfortable grip.In addition to being excellent knives, you also get a lovely cutting board and meat fork for a fairly low price for this quality of knife.

One caveat: They say dishwasher safe, but if you buy nice knives you don't want to warp them in the heat of your dishwasher... so make the investment and wash them by hand.

Review of Chicago Cutlery Insignia Steel 12-Piece Knife Block Set

I've used this set for several years now (mine is the Insignia Matte Series) and have been very pleased with the overall cutting ability of these knives.Even though I also own Global and Shun kitchen knives, I find myself being drawn to the Insignia knives when I am in a hurry or in the middle of a large project.Although both the Global and the Shun have sharper edges, their price difference doesn't equate directly to the increased level of sharpness that you get.That is to say, yes Global and Shun knives are sharper, but they are not three to four hundred percent sharper all though their price difference certainly would suggest that.

Using my Insignia knives, I am able to quickly dice, cut, and slice through onions, carrots, chicken, roasts, etc.That said, there are several cavets that need to be stated.First, don't wash these knives in a dishwasher.It has nothing to do with the quality of the steel.I wouldn't wash my Ken Onion Shun Chef's knife in the dishwasher and that one knife costs as much as two whole sets of the Insignia.Second, these knives need to be honed regularly.A few strokes after every use makes a real difference.Third, after owning the knives for almost two years, Isharpened each of the knives on oil stones.These knives, like all knives will need tobe resharpened from time to time.The good news is that they resharpened quite nicely, a tribute to their quality.Since resharpening, they have continued to hold their edges.

Last, the balance of these knives is more than adequate.I also own the matching sanduko and have found it to be the best of the series.All though I am a bit of a knife snob, and although I would love to purchase a block set of either the Shun or the Globals, I can't justify it given that the Insignia's cut so well.My wife would really give me no end of grief if I threw out a perfectly good set of knives.And a good set of knives these are.

I bought these knives as a Christmas gift because my Mom bought me some and I love them.They are so sharp and cut so smooth.They will eventually need to be sharpened, but wait as long as possible, because they won't be as sharp as they were from the factory.But they are still great knives.They will last longer if they are HAND WASHED and stored in a sleeve or a box where they won't come in contact anything.I can't comment on the individual pieces, because as I said, I gave them away.I just know that Rada has great quality products.

I started buying Rada cutlery at one of the big Home & Garden Shows because I was tired of cheap knives and of peelers that just didn't work.This knife is simply the best for the price - you don't need to spend a fortune on the German brands - this U.S. made knife is every bit as good at a fraction of the price.It works so well for all you kitchen needs; I use it for salads, chopping meat, and just about anything else.

The knife stays extremely sharp - I've nicked myself a number of times when I got too close to what I was cutting.You can keep the blade super sharp by using the Rada sharpner, so there's no need to replace this knife ever.

The only drawback, if you are into appearances, is that the handle will discolor if it is not dried after washing or if you allow it to sit in water.Also, these knives should not be put in the dishwasher if you care about appearance - the handle will get darkened and somewhat pitted.
